Tree service in West Mobile

Tree service in west Mobile, where the subdivisions were pine woods a few years ago

From Hillcrest to Schillinger Road and out past the Beltline, west Mobile's neighborhoods were built in pine stands. The pines left behind are the tallest things in the yard, and the first things down in a storm.

West Mobile is where the city grew in the last 40 years, and it's still growing: the 2023 annexation brought neighborhoods expected to add about 20,000 residents into the city limits, and the Census estimates that counted them for the first time in May 2025 put Mobile at just over 201,000. Most of it, from Airport Boulevard and Cottage Hill Road out to Schillinger Road and Hillcrest, was pine plantation or second-growth woods before the subdivisions went in. The builders kept the pines for shade, and a generation later those pines are 80 feet tall, standing alone in 60-foot lots, in sandy soil that goes soft under 66 inches of rain a year.

That makes west Mobile the center of our pine removal work, especially since the 2024 southern pine beetle epidemic, the worst in Alabama in 23 years, left dead and dying pines in yards from Hillcrest to Theodore. The lots are developed and outside the historic districts, so almost no private tree here needs a City permit; the right-of-way trees along the streets are the exception. The newer neighborhoods have buried utilities, so Alabama 811 is called before every stump is ground. And the new construction on the edges, around Schillinger and toward Semmes, is where we do lot clearing, keeping the live oaks and the best longleafs and taking out the thin pines near the pad.

What we do in West Mobile

Pine removal

Lone, leaning and beetle-killed pines taken down before the season, several per visit where neighbors go in together.

Storm cleanup

After a hurricane, the subdivisions off Cottage Hill and Hillcrest are where the pines on roofs are. Priority dispatch.

Stump grinding

Pine stumps ground below grade with 811 called first; the newer streets have buried utilities.

Lot clearing

Forestry mulching and selective clearing on the new-construction edges toward Semmes.

Trimming

Water oaks, pecans and crape myrtles in the older subdivisions, pruned not topped.

No permit, usually

Developed lots outside the historic districts need no City permit for private trees; right-of-way trees do.

Questions from West Mobile homeowners

My neighbor's pine leans over my yard. What can I do?

Talk to the neighbor and offer to split the cost; a leaning pine is cheaper to remove than a roof. You can cut back what hangs over your property line, but the tree is theirs. If it's clearly dangerous and they won't act, document it with photos and dates.

Is my neighborhood in the city now?

If you were annexed in 2023, yes, and the City of Mobile's tree rules and trash rules apply. On a developed lot that means no permit for private trees off the right-of-way, and the City's limits on curb piles.

Can you take down three pines in one day?

Usually, yes, in an open yard. Multi-tree days are 10 to 20 percent cheaper per tree because setup and haul-off are shared.

How much does pine removal cost in west Mobile?

A 40- to 70-foot pine near the house runs $800 to $2,000; over 70 feet or over the roof, $1,800 to $4,500; dead or beetle-killed, 20 to 40 percent more. Stump grinding is $125 to $350 per pine.
